Monica

Monica Diehl ’18 MSN, RN, Chief Nursing Officer, Keystone Health
A 2006 graduate of Penn State’s Nursing Program, Monica Diehl started her nursing career as a staff nurse at a local hospital where she specialized in Maternal-Child Care. She quickly grew professionally into a charge nurse and preceptor, devoting herself to her patients as well as the growth and development of new nurses.

Passionate about patient centered care, Monica became distressed as she saw an overwhelming number of patients presenting to the hospital with Social Determinants of Health, a lack of support, and increased educational needs. These needs inspired Monica to go back to school to obtain her MSN in Nursing Education from Wilson College. Upon graduation, she sought out a career opportunity that would allow her to serve her community and her patients in a new way.

In 2019, Monica joined Keystone Health as their Director of Education. After a year of identifying needs and creating programs to meet those, COVID brought everything to a halt. In a time when chaos and fear swept the world, Monica chose to step out of her administrative position and began her next chapter as a member of Keystone’s COVID Response Team.

As a frontline worker, Monica performed COVID tests and educated the community. She worked with patients from all walks of life, building relationships and trust. When COVID vaccines became available, she led the vaccination efforts at Keystone. When mAb became available, she assisted in opening an infusion center, eliminating the need for high-risk patients to travel hours for care. Monica credits the success of all these programs to the support and trust bestowed on her by Keystone Health and its CEO, Joanne Cochran.

In 2022, Monica was named Keystone’s first Chief Nursing Officer. As a CNO, Monica’s primary focus is ensuring that every patient who enters Keystone receives high-quality care. For this to be achieved, the workforce needed to be expanded. Monica created a program to reduce financial barriers by providing tuition assistance with employment obligations to Practical Nursing Program students. She partnered with the National Institute for Medical Assistant Advancement (NIMAA) to provide externship opportunities for MA students and then sought out grants to cover student tuition and create an interactive learning lab at Keystone. She is involved in the local Career Technology Center, PNP Program, and sits on the advisory boards for local nursing programs.

In addition to her efforts to ensure a workforce to deliver high-quality nursing care, Monica also seeks out opportunities to make healthcare more accessible. Keystone was founded in 1986 because while healthcare was available in Franklin County, it was not accessible to all. Partnering with other community organizations, Monica has expanded access by creating new programs.

As a leader, Monica believes we need to model the behaviors and care we want others to emulate. Every day she tries to be a living representation of Keystone’s mission, as well as a model and resource for current and future nurses.
