An independent, non-profit funded by 2 sons and 2 daughters of Sun Oil founder Joseph N. Pew and his wife Mary Anderson Pew. A non-profit public interest law firm with it's start right here in Franklin County 20 years ago.  Their mission is to provide free and affordable legal services, education and organizing help to communities facing threats to their local environment, agriculture, economy and quality of life.  They assist communities across the U.S. and around the world. They also offer an education program (The Daniel Pennock Democracy School) designed to teach residents and activists how to understand and regain community rights and confront corporate control.

This organization was created in 2005 by 12 members of the Energy and Environment Program at the advocacy group Public Citizen.  They have built a powerful grassroots movement to protect our most important resources, food and water.  In the ensuing 10 years they have grown to over 100 staff members and have offices across the country and in Latin America and the European Union (as Food and Water Europe).

UCS was founded in 1969 by scientists and students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  Apalled by how the U.S. government was misusing science, the founders drafted a statement calling for scientific research to be directed away from military technologies and toward solving pressing environmental and social problems.  By mobilizing scientists and combining their voices with those of advocates, educators, business people and concerned citizens they have built a reputation for fairness and accuracy with an impressive record of accomplishments.
