Exercise Science Concentration Requirements

Pre-professional Concentration

Our pre‐professional concentration prepares students to further their studies and training by building a strong science and human physiology foundation.  This concentration is geared for students looking to apply to graduate school to become a health science or allied health professional, specifically, athletic training, physical therapy, chiropractic or medicine. 
Course Requirements include
•    CHM101L General Chemistry I (with lab)
Or
•    CHM103L Fundamentals of General Chemistry (with lab)
•    CHM102L General Chemistry II Lab
Or
•    CHM104L Fundamentals of Organic Chemistry Lab
•    MAT110 Pre-calculus Mathematics
•    PHY101L Physics I (with lab) 
•    *PHY102L Physics II 
*This class is not a requirement for the degree or this concentration. However, the course will be required for either graduate or medical school application.


Human Performance Concentration

Our human performance concentration emphasizes learning how to work with people with a variety of health and fitness goals. Students learn foundational knowledge and skills often used in fitness and training professions, focused on assessing human performance. Students also learn to develop strategies for improving physical fitness and improving performance.  Elective courses allow students to expand and build upon knowledge acquired in their core courses and gives them the ability to personalize the concentration in a way that is most helpful to meet their health and fitness goals.

•    ESS340L Applied Anatomy and Kinesiology 
•    ESS222L Exercise Management for Special Cases 
•    ESS320 Administrative Aspects of Exercise and Sport
Two of the following:
•    ESS270 Topics in Exercise Science*
•    ESS370 Topics in Exercise Science*
•    NUR222 Intersection of Healthcare and Society 
•    PE128 Strength and Weight Training (PE)
Or
•    PE140 Personal Fitness (PE)
•    PSY331 Health Psychology 
*Topics to be determined by department, as needed


Holistic Health

Our holistic health concentration emphasizes learning the basic concepts of health by exploring wellness from a holistic perspective. Students are taught how to live a healthy life, manage stress, and understand the benefits of physical activity – in addition to learning about complementary and alternative medicine beyond traditional Western Medicine techniques.  Elective courses allow students to expand and build upon knowledge acquired in their core courses and gives them the ability to personalize the concentration to address career goals.

Six semester hours from the following (no more than three hours can be taken in PE or Activity):

•    HSC330 Health Promotion and Program Development
•    GS240 Global Health
•    NUR222 Intersection of Healthcare and Society
•    PSY331 Health Psychology
•    PE or Activity course (e.g. PE130 Yoga, Pilates; PE140 Personal Fitness; DNC151 Dance Technique I)
